Coming Full Circle: Affiliate Marketing Drop-Out to Graduate
How are we going to buy groceries next week?
The question caught me off guard. I knew things were tight but I also knew that for the moment we were okay.
We were stretching things out but then my husband said “You realize the money’s about to run out. Our family will never let our kids starve but what are we going to do when our money runs out?”
My heart sank into my stomach. What are we going to do next week? How are we going to pay our bills? These questions started keeping me up night after night.
Now my general thinking is there’s an answer to every problem out there so I started researching. I discovered affiliate marketing and found information on how to create facebook ads, drive people to a landing page, and make sales. I knew that there was probably more to it than they said but I gave it a shot.
The problem? We had no money to post ads while I fumbled my way through learning how to do affiliate marketing so I gave it up after a couple of months.
Then my husband mentioned blogging and I was pretty good at it. My readers loved my information but my problem was how much time blogging took.
One post took probably about three days of my time and five to six hours total. The thought of building something that slow drove me insane. But, I stuck with it for almost two years and in that time learned tons including how to build a blog or website, internet marketing, how to drive traffic through Pinterest, how to network with other people.
Through everything I never lost my interest in affiliate marketing- I wish I could succeed but I didn’t know how outside of blogging until, by chance, it all came together one day.
What is Affiliate Marketing?
Affiliate marketing is where you promote a product and sell it for a company. Then they give you a percentage of that sale back. That percentage can be anywhere from two percent all the way up to 100 percent.
I know that sounds crazy and a bit too good to be true. Why would they give you 100 percent of the products?
Because you have now gathered information from customers which they can use to reach out to them and sell them other products. They may not care about that $100 product you sold [well they care but to them it’s worth it]. But, you’ll care about it if you sell 20 of them because now you have $2,000 in your pocket.
Now, with anything in life, if it sounds too good to be true probably is. There is a right way and many wrong ways to do affiliate marketing. I have done quite a few of them and I have learned quite a few lessons.
The great thing is now I have a good grasp on how to do affiliate marketing and how to make extra cash for my family.
So before we go any further about the technicalities of affiliate marketing, let me tell you about myself.
I got into affiliate marketing after having children when working from home as a nurse case manager was too hard and stressful. So after my second child, I decided not to go back to work which was great until about 10 months later when all of a sudden my husband’s rheumatoid arthritis, which causes daily pain, went from being manageable allowing him to work as a firefighter to completely out of control. He had to start using a cane and every step he took was painful.
Practically overnight we went from living comfortably to having no income and it was a scary time in our lives. Thankfully we have wonderful family who were able to help us through. We had a little bit of savings but we went through it quickly. That’s when I started looking for opportunities to make money from home.
Discovering The Missing Piece
So I learned a ton, but I always felt like something was missing.
Then one day I ran across a book that peaked my interest and ended up blowing my mind. The book was a compilation of entrepreneurs who had all made over a million dollars in their business. They asked them all what they would do if they lost all of their money and had to get it back in the next 30 days.
It was a cool concept and I was intrigued so I got this book much on a whim. Of course they had an up-sell (the offer that sometimes comes after you initially buy something) and it was a 30 day challenge on building a funnel.
(If you’re not familiar with a funnel it is a series of webpages that take people through the selling process to warm them up to you, sell your product or sell somebody else’s product, and then gets them on your email list so that you can then continue communicating with them).
Now, I don’t know about you but when I join email challenges, I have a tendency to let them sit in my inbox and never do anything with them. Even when I do read them, I might read one or two and then I tend to move on.
The same thing happened with this challenge until I listened to the first video. At this point I was about a week and a half behind but when I listened there was a ton of great information- I’m talking mind-blowing stuff. What’s even more amazing is that the first video was just the pre-video! iI wasn’t even a real challenge stuff.
So I skip ahead to the first video of the challenge and, once again there’s TONS of great information. I felt like I hit the Jackpot. They literally discussed everything from how to talk to people, how to create content fast, how to sell products. And not only your own products but other people’s products as well.
All I could think of was WHY? Why couldn’t I find this two years earlier? Come to find out it was the first time they had run the challenge.
The One Funnel Away Challenge changed the course of everything I was doing and it was the tipping point for getting back into affiliate marketing.
I’ve literally come full circle and I finally discovered what was missing the first time I tried to do affiliate marketing. It’s not quite as simple as having a landing page and then getting clients over to the sales page.
Having a step by step plan has been amazing. I’ve already started turning a profit from affiliate marketing (I was already profiting from website design and my membership but to profit from affiliate marketing has been amazing.
Why I Want to Share What I’ve Learned
I know there are people out there who are where I was.
You start affiliate marketing but nobody’s buying your stuff.
You might get people to click on your ads if you drop them in a few facebook groups, but overall you’re not making any sales and you’re doing what they say.
So why aren’t you making money?
That is why I started this podcast.
There’s so many moving parts and there’s a right and wrong way to do things. Sometimes affiliate marketing can be frustrating as hell but seeing your efforts pay off is amazing.
I want you to be able to make money and accomplish whatever your goals are with the money you make. Maybe it’s spending more time with your family, giving your spouse or break, getting a pedicure or putting food on the table. whatever it is, I want you to be able to accomplish that without having to spin your wheels for two years trying to figure this stuff out.
What Kind of Topics Will My Podcast Cover?
I’m also in the process of creating a seven day course, which is going to be very easy to consume because I’m going to record youtube videos and take you through the main things you need to know to start affiliate marketing.
The course will go through how to choose a topic or a niche as well as how to choose the correct audience because both of those are very important. You can have the best product in the world, but if you have the wrong audience, it doesn’t matter- they’re not going to buy it.
Why I encourage you to start a website now. You don’t have to have a website to do affiliate marketing. However, think about it. Let’s say that you find something on facebook. You go to the page, you see that they’re selling other people’s products. You click on the product but you want to start following this person.
You want to go through and start seeing more of what they have to say. They probably have a facebook or instagram, but what do you think when they have their own page? It adds that extra level of credibility. So I do encourage you to start a website, but it’s not a requirement for you to be successful.
People tend to be more successful when they have a website of their own and successful quicker, which is always nice.
I’m also go through how to choose the correct products to promote to your audience as well as how to sell the products. You need to know how to sell, and affiliate marketing is great because it makes you focus on selling right now.
It’s not uncommon for new entrepreneurs to get into internet marketing and then become so focused on creating a product that they overlook learning how to SELL the product they’re creating.
Having a product is great but selling that product is what can make or break you. You can have the best product in the world but if you can’t sell it you won’t succeed.
Affiliate marketing is a great way to stretch those muscles without spending all the time, effort, and energy upfront to create your own product.
I’m also going to go through how to create a funnel as well as how to get your content out there fast and I’ll discuss why it’s important that you do videos.
We’ll also talk about how to tell stories the right way. Now. This is personally one of my struggling points and it’s something I’m practicing. This is ever evolving, right? This is something that I’m willing to say “Hey- I’m learning, I’m practicing. Hopefully I will get better at it.” That’s a muscle you need to stretch and that needs to grow and improve.
The only way you’re going to improve is by getting out there and practicing. I’m probably going to listen to this podcast in two years or even six or three months and think “Oh my God, it was so awful!”
But, you have to be willing to be bad at something before you’re able to be good at it.
So here I am.
Last but not least, we’re going to talk about how to build your email list and why it’s so important.
Those are the main things I plan on covering over the next few episodes as well as putting into an email sequence with a lot of depth to help you get started on the right path with affiliate marketing.
Hopefully you learned a little bit about me as well as what I intend to do in the future with my podcast. Now, if you have any questions, feel free to contact me. I currently have a website and it’s simply DejaCronley.com.
Currently it focuses on blog design, website design and blog design because that is my primary business right now is helping bloggers and people that don’t have a website for their small businesses get up and running fast.
I’m shortly going to start adding more and more information about affiliate marketing because now that I knew what the heck I’m doing and you know, as I start seeing more success, I want to share that with my friends and my family especially. Because if it’s something I can do then chances are anybody can do it.
That does it for today. I hope you have found this mildly entertaining. I promise I will get better at it and I will be talking to you soon. The next episode is going to be all about how to choose a niche and an audience to make selling a lot easier. So have a great one and happy marketing!
